With On2, you can download a restricted version of the Flix Engine to install and demo without needing to purchase a full license. Installation isn’t too difficult, but there is a caveat – 64-bit machines (which really are the standard these days) require a few extra steps that aren’t included in the default installation of the Flix Engine. As always, reading the provided documentation really is the first step:
On2 Flix Engine for Linux System OverviewThe Flix Engine consists of two separate daemons that run to handle video encoding. The first is flixd . Language bindings are also built as part of the installation process, you may select from a variety of languages to create bindings for (PHP, Perl, Python, etc.) which provide access to the Flix Engine within a program written in that language.
On2 Flix Engine for Linux Installation Guide FAQ for 64-bit language bindings supportThe prerequisites for the Flix Engine are:
glibc 2.3.2 or newer. portmap is running. codecs for MEncoder from mplayer binary codecs .For individual languages:
Java: 1.3 or newer. Perl: 5.6.0 or newer with the MakeMaker CPAN module. PHP: 4 or newer with the PHP development package. Python: 2.2 or newer with the Python development package. Now with everything ready for the installation, we can proceed. If the file that is downloaded from On2 is compressed, extract the install file which should look like flix-engine-installer-linux-8.0.6.0.bin
At this point, you can return to the first terminal window and proceed with the On2 Flix Engine installation. When asked what language bindings you need, select the ones you want (PHP, Python, etc.) but do not have the installation tool build those bindings, you must do this manually after the install is complete.
Once complete, the Flix Engine is running, but you need to compile and build the language bindings to interface with it:
# cd /usr/local/src/flixmodules/
