Yes there is-in fact there are several but your car is burning oil because your piston rings are worn or broken. Technically speaking, the thicker the oil the less it will be forced past the piston rings and into the exhaust but it is not always a good

Corporate Behaviour and Climate Change

My good friend Tony O’Sullivan from the Birmingham Green Party sent me this interesting piece…

In 1920 General Motors scientistĀ  Thomas Midgley was charged to come up with a solution for ā€œengine knockā€ the intense vibration of the car engine’s valves and gears.Ā  In 1922 he discovered that by dosing petrol with the lead-containing toxin ā€˜ethyl’ the juddering condition was significantly reduced. Health authorities in the US were immediately alarmed by the potential for widespread lead-poisoning of the workers in the gasoline refining industry, (union publications refer to it as the ā€˜loony gas), as well as members of the general public who would be exposed to the lead-laced exhaust from the fuel.

Lead poisoning as prominent health officials knew had been a familiar and dreaded ā€˜occupational disease’ throughout centuries of European history and by the early 1900’s lead was known as a neurotoxin. Get too much of it and you can irreparably damage the brain and nervous system, you really don’t want to get too much lead into your body. Ā Professors of the day described the introduction of the additive as ā€˜the single most important question in the field of public health that has ever faced the American public’ andĀ Ā  ā€˜a menace to public health’. In 1925, one public health expert Alice Hamilton of Harvard described the distributors of leaded gasoline as ā€˜nothing but murderers’. (Ethyl War, 2003).Ā Ā  The producers did have a considerably less lethal additive that successfully cured ā€˜engine knock’, that substance was iodine but it was ā€˜too expensive to serve as a marketable solution to engine knock’ ( Bryson,2003). In other words it would not deliver the really big profits. Lead on the other hand was easy to extract and work and almost embarrassingly profitable to produce industrially. So in 1923 three of America’s largest corporations, GM, Du Pont and Standard Oil formed a joint enterprise called Ethyl Corp to produce as much ethyl as the world was willing to buy.Ā  They called their additive ā€˜Ethyl’ because it sounded friendlier and less toxic than ā€˜lead’. (Bryson, 2003).
